colleagues, who along with family and friends were co-opted to play against the Yanks during rest and recreation (R&R) leave. And so the Wingers Softball Club was founded and from this connection our name and logo evolved.
Marj was a stalwart of softball at club, state, national and international levels. She has been recognised for service with life membership of Softball Australia, Softball Victoria, Melbourne Softball and Wingers Club. Marj has also been inducted into Softball Australia’s Hall of Fame.
Wingers Club strives to maintain the excellent sporting tradition set by our founder and mentor. Over the years the club has been fortunate to have members committed and dedicated not only to Wingers but to softball in general. Their passion for the game has been demonstrated by their willingness to ‘spread their wings’, widening their involvement by taking on roles as officials, players and administrators both within and outside the club at Association, State, National and International levels.
Wingers have a history of an open friendly family environment. We aim always to warmly welcome members and give everyone the opportunity to develop and enjoy the experiences of our sport in whatever capacity, and at whatever level, they may choose.
During the celebrations the club reflected on just what sixty years of continuity as a women’s sporting club means in the greater softball, and general, community today.
We are one of, if not the oldest, still active softball club in Australia. Are we the oldest?
Current Management are keen to learn of any other club in Australia that can boast participation in sixty years consecutive seasons of softball.
